Tungsten Electrode Application - Aluminum Alloy Welding

Tungsten electrode application application is aluminum and aluminum alloy welding. Aluminum and its alloys can be joined by more methods than any other metal, but aluminum has several chemical and physical properties that need to be understood when using the various joining processes. The specific properties that affect welding are its oxide characteristics, its thermal, electrical, and nonmagnetic characteristics, lack of color change when heated, and wide range of mechanical properties and melting temperatures that result from alloying with other metals.

Almost all kinds of welding methods can be used for aluminum and aluminum alloys, but aluminum and aluminum alloys have different adaptability to a variety of welding methods, various welding methods have their respective applications. Gas welding and arc welding methods's devices are simple and easy to be operated. Aluminum and aluminum alloy sheet can be welded by tungsten electrode AC pulse welding. Aluminum and aluminum alloy plate can use tungsten arc welding, argon-helium mixed gas tungsten arc welding, MIG welding, pulsed MIG welding.

Tungsten Electrode Packing

Tungsten electrode packing is based on the dimensions of the elctrode. Regularly, the popular sizes with lengths of 150mm and 175mm are packed in 10pcs/box, which is plastic box.

When the lengths are longer than 175mm, such as 200mm, 300mm, 400mm, 450mm, the packing is chosen bundle one as following picture showed.

For solid tungsten electrode, the diameter is outer one. The key caliper is used mm as its unit with grids of 10, 20, and 50. 3.2 Tungsten Electrode

3.2mm is one of the most popular diameter for electrodes.

Tungsten electrode owns the following advantages: ignite easily (tip would not splash and headshot), durable (they can be sharpened). They are difficult to be polluted in spot welding (tungsten needle tip is not white). When welding aluminum bike, tungsten electrode would not deformed .

4.8 Tungsten Electrode

Shape of tungsten electrode tip is a critical factor for TIG, when using DCSP,electrode tip is needed to br tip shape, and tip angle would change due to the different range of applications, electrode diameter and welding current. Narrow joints need smaller tip angle, when welding very thin material, it requires low current to stabilize the arc, proper grounding electrode can make a good arc stability and appropriate bead width. Cerium tungsten electrode and thoriated tungsten electrode are working in DC welding (color are gray head and red head), pure tungsten (green head) is suitable for welding AC welding (welding of aluminum).

3.0 Tungsten Electrode

3.0 Lanthanum tungsten electrode is introduced in the 1980s from European countries to replace thorium tungsten one. The lanthanum tungsten electrode contains 2% lanthanum oxide(La203). In Europe and Japan, in most industries, lanthanum tungsten electrode has been the most commonly used for its excellent welding properties.

3.0 Cerium tungsten electrode has no radioactive contamination. It can easily arc by small current, and dimensional arc current is also small. At low current DC conditions, cerium tungsten electrode is popular, especially in pipes, small fine parts and stainless steel products welding.
