Does the Diameter of a Tungsten Wire Matter?

The regular sizes of tungsten wire can vary depending on the manufacturer and the intended application. However, some common sizes include:

Diameter: the diameter typically ranges from 0.01 mm to 3 mm. The specific diameter needed depends on the desired application, as well as the required electrical and thermal properties.

Length: the wire is typically supplied in spools of varying lengths.

Gauge: the gauge of the wire refers to its diameter, and is often expressed in millimeters or in American Wire Gauge (AWG) units. For example, a black tungsten wire with a diameter of 0.5 millimeters would have a gauge of approximately 22 AWG.

Does diameter of tungsten wire matter?

The diameter of a wire does matter, as it affects a number of the wire's physical and electrical properties. Some of the factors that can be impacted by the diameter of a wire include:

Resistance: the resistance of a wire is inversely proportional to its cross-sectional area. This means that a wire with a larger diameter will have a lower resistance than a wire with a smaller diameter.

Current carrying capacity: the current carrying capacity of a wire is proportional to its cross-sectional area. This means that a wire with a larger diameter can carry more current than a wire with a smaller diameter without overheating.

tungsten wire image

Strength: the strength of a wire is proportional to its cross-sectional area. This means that a wire with a larger diameter will be stronger and able to support more weight than a wire with a smaller diameter.

Flexibility: the flexibility of a wire is inversely proportional to its diameter. This means that a wire with a smaller diameter will be more flexible and easier to bend than a wire with a larger diameter.

Therefore, when choosing a wire, it is important to consider its intended application and select a diameter that provides the desired balance of resistance, current carrying capacity, strength, and flexibility.

How Does the Diameter of Tungsten Wire Affect Applications?

The diameter of tungsten wire is very important in some cases. The metal wire is a common wire material commonly used in light bulbs, electronic devices, thermocouples, heaters, and more. Its diameter determines its physical properties such as resistance value, current capacity, and service life, so the diameter has an important impact on application performance.

Here are some situations where W wire diameter needs to be considered:

Bulb: the sizes of the tungsten filament are important factors in determining the brightness and life of the bulb. Thicker tungsten filaments can withstand higher currents and higher temperatures, but may have lower brightness. Thinner tungsten filaments can provide higher brightness, but may have a shorter lifespan.

Electronic equipment: in electronic equipment, W wire is usually used to make electron tubes, electron emitters, etc. The diameter and length of the wire determine its characteristics such as resistance value, current capacity and efficiency of emitting electrons.

Thermocouple: a thermocouple is usually composed of two dissimilar metals (usually platinum and tungsten), with W wire being one of the materials. The diameter and length of the wire have a significant effect on the sensitivity and response time of the thermocouple.

In summary, the diameter of tungsten wire is very important in many applications, because it can affect the electrical and thermal characteristics of this metal wire, which in turn affects the performance of the entire device.

The size of W wire can vary widely depending on its intended use. It's important to note that the sizes may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and between different applications. It is always best to consult with the manufacturer or supplier for the specific size information for your intended use.

Cerium Tungsten Electrode Price on Feb. 9, 2023

The latest price of φ2.0x175mm cerium tungsten electrode is USD0.70/PC, EXW XIAMEN, CHINA on Feb. 9, 2023.

Cerium tungsten electrode (WC20) is alloyed with about 2% cerium oxide. It is a non-radioactive, refractory or non-consumable metal electrode material, which is the preferred substitute for thorium tungsten electrodes. Regular diameter of the electrode is between 0.5mm and 12.0mm, and the length is 150mm and 175mm.

The addition of this small percentage of cerium oxide increases the electron emission qualities of the electrode which gives them a better starting characteristic and a higher current carrying capacity with no spitting. With the increase of cerium oxide content, the ablation resistance and arc starting of cerium tungsten electrode will increase; with the increase of use time, the welding performance will gradually decrease.

The electrode has excellent arc starting properties at low current, and can operate successfully with AC or DC electrode negative. If used on higher current applications, the cerium oxide may be concentrated to the excessively hot tip of the electrode. In addition, WC20 is also used in inert gas shielded arc welding, hydrogen atom welding, argon arc surfacing, pulse argon arc welding, plasma welding, plasma cutting, plasma spraying, plasma melting, etc. The welding materials can be carbon steel, stainless steel, silicon copper, copper, bronze, titanium and so on.

EB Tungsten Filament Price on Feb. 9, 2023

The latest price of φ0.8mm EB tungsten filament is USD 2.00/PC, EXW XIAMEN, CHINA on Feb. 9, 2023.

Tungsten filaments, also called cathodes or electron emitters or electron sources, are mainly made of high-quality tungsten. Of all pure metals, tungsten has the highest melting point (3422°C), the lowest vapor pressure at temperatures above 1650°C, and the highest tensile strength. Tungsten also has the lowest coefficient of thermal expansion of all pure metals. This combination of properties makes tungsten an ideal material.

Tungsten can be used in both thermionic electron guns and field-emission (CFE) electron guns. Electron beams come from filaments made of various materials. The most common is the tungsten hairpin gun, which is widely used in scanning electron microscopes, transmission electron microscopes, and microprobe systems. This filament is a tungsten ring that acts as a cathode. Apply voltage to the loop to heat it up. The anode, which is positive relative to the filament, forms a strong attraction to electrons. This causes electrons to be accelerated towards the anode. Some accelerate near the anode and down the column to the sample.

An electron gun works at a high temperature, which is required for thermionic emission. For this, a filament or the cathode should be of a material that has a high melting point in order for it to continuously emit electrons. Tungsten filament is folded with various shapes to help in focusing the electron beam.

Black Tungsten Wire Is Used in Electronics, Aerospace, and Medical Fields

Black tungsten wire is a type of tungsten wire that has been coated with a black oxide to enhance its corrosion resistance and provide a sleek, black appearance. Tungsten is a dense, metallic element with a high melting point, making it an ideal material for high-temperature applications, such as heating elements and electrical conductors.

In the production of this wire, the tungsten is first cleaned and then heated in an oxygen-rich atmosphere, causing a black oxide layer to form on the surface. The black oxide layer provides additional protection against corrosion, making the wire more durable and longer-lasting than uncoated tungsten wire.
