Both miners and traders in China have boosted supply as some improvement has been seen in tungsten prices on the domestic market lately. Prices for 65 percent grade wolframite have been in the 115,000 to 118,000 renminbi per metric ton range (US$18,456 to $18,939), with deals over the past several weeks often reported at 117,000 renminbi (US$18,779), according to Metal-Pages6.
Prices for tungsten products have also improved. In addition to the domestic price increases, Chinese export prices for tungsten carbide reportedly rose from $44 to $45 per kilogram to $45 to $46 per kilogram over the past week. Though APT prices rose in China, export prices are flat at $350 to $355.
Though the tungsten market may have experienced a slight bounce, further upward price movement is not deemed likely or sustainable. Tungsten concentrate prices are expected to be relatively steady over the next few weeks and there appears to be ample supply on the spot market, eliminating a source of support for rising tungsten product prices. Furthermore, production halts among Chinese APT smelters remain widespread and demand from Europe is still weak.
China has released its 2013 export quotas. For tungsten and tungsten products the quota is 15,400 metric tons, the same as it was in 2012.

Recently, Ministry of Commerce of PRC has issued the first lot of tungsten quota in 2013.
The whole weight of tungsten with quota is 9,238 tons with a decrease of 0.02percent. AMT and APT are 2,033tons by 4.33percent down. Tungstate is 276tons equals 2012. Oxide is 4,619tons, going up 8.68percent. Tungsten powder and its finished products are 2,310tons, by decreasing 10.71 percent.

Novelty Tungsten
In recent weeks tungsten bars encased in gold have surfaced in Manhattan and
elsewhere around the globe. They look and feel like the real McCoy. They are
good enough to pass the casual examination of experts (e.g., Patrick Heller’s
NumisMaster columns June 5 and Sept. 25).
The problem of fake gold bars, or gold coins for that matter, is not new. A quick web search will show numerous reports of bogus bars from the past decade alone. For example, on Nov. 18, 2009, Kitco reported four 400-ounce gold bars shipped from the United States to Hong Kong as proving to be gold-plated tungsten. Then in February 2010, employees at Germany’s W.C. Heraeus, the world’s largest privately owned refinery, came across a 500 gram tungsten-filled gold bar received from an unidentified bank.
However, this time around the story has grown legs. It has taken on a life of its own. Some media reports and particularly a number of web blogs have sensationalized the issue. Several claim that the latest discoveries are the merest tip of an enormous tungsten-filled iceberg that affects the gold holdings in major world stockpiles – including Fort Knox. No doubt an online Sept. 23 report that 60 tons of tungsten-filled gold bars turned-up in an unnamed Asian depository has helped fuel the flames of conspiracy. However, I have been unable to substantiate this story.
But for most of us it is the more mundane matter of ensuring the 500 gram gold bar we brought as security against a rainy day is the genuine article. Folks in this category may be taken aback when they realize the quality of some of the current crop of fake bars and where these are turning up. While both aspects are concerns, high-grade fake bars have been around for decades.
Sadly such bars are quite easy to produce – by anyone. Try Googling, “How to make fake gold bars.” A Popular Science article from 2008 will probably be near the top of your search. It tells anyone with a half-decent machine shop and a supply of gold and tungsten how to go about it.
Tungsten has a density of 19.25 g/cc compared with gold’s 19.30 g/cc, but unlike gold, tungsten is not particularly easy to work. It can’t be readily cast into ingots. However, slugs and machined bars of the metal are readily available. It currently sells for about $35 a kilogram against $57,000 a kilogram for gold.
The classic do-it-yourself fake involves drilling holes in genuine gold bars and filling these with tungsten rods. Repairs to the bars have to be done carefully but a competent metal-worker can make an acceptable product that will pass superficial tests.
This drill-and-fill approach is best-suited for small bars. For larger items such as 10-ounce or standard 400-ounce gold bars the trick is to gold plate or gold dip a tungsten core. The bar is then cleaned up and fake stamps impressed on it.
For better quality fakes no expense is spared to produce a superior product. A gold layer some 5-6 millimeters thick is commonly used. Not only does this foil superficial testing but frustrates non-destructive instrumental analytical procedures such as x-ray fluorescence.
Even if the cost to produce a top-quality fake 400-ounce London Good Delivery Bar is some $50,000, a fraudster can pocket a profit of over quarter of a million dollars per bar per sale, all presumably tax-free.

2012钨制品配额总结
今年钨品出口配额（含外资企业配额）15400吨已全部下达，比去年减少300吨，同比减少1.91%。其中：仲钨酸铵、偏钨酸铵3542吨，同比减少1.92%，占配额总量的23%，占比与去年持平；钨酸及其盐类462吨，同比减少67.29%，占配额总量的3%，占比比去年减少6个百分点；三氧化钨及蓝色氧化钨7084吨，同比减少13.23%，占配额总量的46%，占比比去年减少6个百分点；钨粉及其制品4312吨，同比增加71.66%，占配额总量的28%，占比比去年增加12个百分点。

The price of
tungsten powder has been increasing in an astonishing speed from RMB320.00/KG to
more than RMB380.00/KG in the past 10 days, which is increased almost by 20%
compared with what was last month. As an indispensable component of tungsten
products, the prices of tungsten products such as tungsten radiation shielding,
tungsten cubes, tungsten rods and tungsten plates keep increasing accordingly.

official indicated that is resulted from the development of China’s economy,
labor cost increasing, lack of electronic powder, which leads to the sharp
increasing. Besides, as applications of tungsten products have been turned from
traditional areas to new concept fields, such as electronic, military and energy
resource areas, which resulted in a great demand of tungsten material and
related products. Therefore, it is estimated that prices for tungsten related
will go in an increasing trend.
Tungsten Price Reaches Its Peak in 2011, and Climbing in 2012
With unique
characteristics, Tungsten is invaluable to various industries. The Tungsten is
made for tungsten-carbide drills and cutting tools for oil and mining
applications for the properties of highest melting point after carbon, and high
density, which makes up approximately 60 percent of its demand. The high melting
point of tungsten makes it invaluable for military applications as well, and it
is commonly used in missile/rocket nozzles because it can stand up to the high
temperatures. Tungsten has been regarded as a strategic metal because of the
world’s reliance on China as the major source of supply.
China has
decreased export quotas for the metal since 2008. As of this year the quota
stands at 15,700 tonnes, a reduction of 300 tonnes over 2010. The tight supply
of the metal, as well as increased demand has sent prices through to all time
highs. The price for ferrotungsten as of Feb. 23 is at $50 per kg, tungsten APT
is quoted at $380 per mtu. These prices are well over the record highs reached
last week of $45 per kg.
There are 5
factors resulting in this situation. First of all, China has banned exports of
concentrate, raw material, but they will export semi-refined and refined
powders. In 2004-5 the recycling component of the market was around 5 percent,
now it is at 35 percent. As the Chinese reduced exports, part of that buffer was
taken up by increased recycling, but that has hit a ceiling.
And the
second, the market was able to substitute a lack of raw materials coming from
China with increased recycling efforts. However, a 35 percent recycling rate is
at around the maximum level. New demand for the metal has to be met by new
mining production. All of these factors were in play before the economic
collapse, shortly thereafter, “the price for tungsten APT went down to $185 per
mtu.
The next,
the low prices and lack of buyers forced many tungsten miners to halt
production. As the market started coming back inventories of the metal were
being depleted. “There was an initial surge to restock, and all the while the
balance between recycled increased and the reduced exports from china have hit a
wall. The increased demand then starts to push prices up.
There are
very few substitutes because of the unique characteristics of tungsten. Pricing
for tungsten is inelastic, I use the analogy that if you are drilling an oil
well, if you have to pull your drill string up 10,000 feet three more times to
change drill bits, that’s gets pretty expensive. The need for drill bits in the
oil sector alone is a market that can not survive without the metal, and oil
prices are on the rise.
And the
last, new markets for tungsten will also be the driver of future demand.
Tungsten is quickly replacing lead in a variety of industries because of the
toxic nature of lead. Jewelry demand, tungsten’s use in LCD screens, and new
breakthroughs in nanotechnology will all add to an already tight supply chain.
Until new mining can make up the shortfalls expect prices to continue to
rise.
There are a
lot of new markets for tungsten, they are small market, but each adds tonnage.
If you add up all the new demand you all of a sudden you have a few thousand
tones. This new technology allows us to nano-coat tungsten particles with
polymers to create a bendable product that replaces lead. While the technology
has yet to get traction, but when it does it could comprise 5-10 percent of the
market, price is an issue, and some of the products are price sensitive. These
materials can be used in automotive, medical and other various industries such
as nuclear power. A recent invention from Entergy Corporation uses tungsten as a
radioactive shielding agent and is replacing lead in nuclear facilities. The
supply shortages of tungsten will continue to push prices up until new
production makes up the difference. The biggest new market which is still yet to
come is the composite market.

Cerium Tungsten Electrode
Cerium tungsten electrode is the electrode of
tungsten added with 2%of CeO2.The power of its electronic transgression is
2.4ev,less than that of thorium-tungsten electrode .Its arc derivation voltage
is also lower with better arc derivation function and higher arc power
stability.The current allowed under the condition of anode direct current is
higher and the burn spoilage is smaller.
Lanthanated Tungsten Electrode
The lanthanated tungsten electrodes are
becoming more popular in the circle of welding in the world soon after they were
developed, because of their good welding performance. The electric conductivity
of lanthanated tungsten electrode is most closed to that of 2% thoriated
Tungsten electrodes.
Welders can easily replace thoriated tungsten electrodes
with lanthanated tungsten electrodes at either AC or DC and not
have to make any welding program changes.
Thoriated Tungsten Electrode
2% Thoriated Tungsten contains a nominal 2 wt-% or thorium
oxide (ThO2) that is evenly dispersed throughout the entire length of the
Tungsten. The most common type of Tungsten used today.
Thoriated
tungsten electrode provides excellent resistance from weld pool
contamination while at the same time offers the welder easier arc starting
capabilities and a more stable arc. Generally used for DC electrode negative or
straight polarity applications such as carbon & stainless steels, nickel
alloys and titanium.

Pure Tungsten Electrode
Pure tungsten electrodes the one without any
addition of oxide. This allows the tip to form a clean, balled end which
provides good arc stability on AC. The power of electronic transgression is as
high as 4.5ev. Requiring a high voltage for arc derivation, it has a low current
capacity and is easily burnt. It’s good for application under the condition of
AC and in the situation of low welding requirements.
Pure tungsten electrode can form a clean, balled tip when heated and provides great arc stability for AC welding with balanced wave. Pure tungsten also provides good arc stability for AC sine wave welding, especially on aluminum and magnesium, but is not typically used for DC welding (it does not provide as strong of arc starts as thoriated or ceriated electrodes).
