How to Weld Copper Bonded Tungsten Copper Electrode

The welding method of copper bonded tungsten copper electrode is silver brazing, which is the most popular method in our workshop. The silver welding material is used, so that the electricity conductivity can be maintained.

The copper bonded electrode is mainly used for spot welding, which is for the industry of steel vehicles. When used to weld, the welding method applied for the welding bodies is pressure welding, which is a welding method that do not used any welding material, but high pressure to joint two parts together, so that the work pieces is without resistance on the welding gap. Copper is a material with high electricity conductivity, which is used to convey electricity and generate heat for welding bodies.

For the welding method to the electrode itself, besides brazing, there are other welding methods, such as pressure weld, melting weld, etc.

Melting weld is metals welding and recrystallization, which is the same process of casting. This method is to heat the welded part until melting, the welded parts will be welded together after cooling. The methods include arc welding, gas welding, electroslag welding, electron beam welding and excitation welding. 

Pressure weld is make the welded part under great pressure and make the contacted surface without oxidized materials and other impurities. The welded two parts will be welded together when reached their stress range. Pressure weld is not applied any welding filling materials, but only pressure to move the oxidized materials on the surface and weld the workpieces together by certain pressure.

Brazing is applied liquid material to fill in the gap of two welded parts, and jointed them together. This method required a third metals, such as silver. Hard brazing and soft brazing are included in these two welding methods.

Even though these three methods can be used for the welding of copper and tungsten copper, silver brazing is still the widely used method. Any other welding methods or any opinion on tungsten copper are all welcomed to be discussed.

Tungsten Iridium Stream Mouth

Tungsten iridium stream mouth is made of a body of tungsten and inserted a tube made of iridium, instead of the whole part to be an alloy of tungsten and iridium.

Iridium tube is used because of its advantages of anti-corrosion, high erosion resistance, insoluble in acids, good plasticity, and high elasticity modulus. And the body of tungsten is used also takes of its high density over 17.7g/cm3, high corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and high erosion resistance to lots of acids.

Owing to these good properties, the tube is applied together with the body of tungsten part to be used in many industries, such as refractory ceramics, rare earth metal smelting, induction furnace heating and quartz glass melting.

Requirements of Tungsten and Iridium 

1.0 Density of tungsten body
The density of tungsten should be ≥17.7g/cm3.
2.0Bonding strength
3.0The bonding strength of tungsten and iridium tube should pass the testing of keeping iridium tube 10s without dropping under 1000g weight.
4.0 Appearance
The product appearance should be clean, smooth, no breakage, no holes, no deformation and other drawbacks.
The inner side of iridium tube should be smooth, no holes, no breakage and other drawbacks.

Bonding Strength Testing Method

The bonding of tungsten body and iridium tube has been the most difficult production process for the stream mouth. If the part is not bonded well, the tube is easily dropped, and the lifetime of the stream mouth is shortened, installation times are increased, production time is shortened, too. As a result, the manufacturing cost is going up a lot. Therefore, the dealing of the bonding has been very important.

The testing steps are putting the finished stream mouth on the platform as following, mouth is on the surface of platform, adding 1000g weight on the top of iridium tube, and keeping the weight 10s.

I have been in tungsten industry for almost ten years, and I have seen many kinds and types of gift made by tungsten, such as tungsten ring, tungsten bracelet, tungsten pig, etc. however, I never found a gift made as a name card, a luggage card. The card is made as thinner as 0.3mm, which is not as easy for tungsten as for tungsten is a refractory metal, it is made by powder metallurgy, and easily to make with breakage during forging. The thinner, the more difficult. Since we designed the tungsten card to be as similar as the name card and luggage card in the appearance, we try and try, and finally the thin sheet is made out. Under the great difficulty, even though we have been producing the thin sheet, we still can not produce large size, such as 500mm width, what we can manufacture is much smaller, but they are enough for us to make out this card. After thin sheet, we use wire cutting to cut the size as the name card of 90mmx50mm, and luggage card is much smaller 90mmx25mm. Surely these two sizes are not for all, they can be customized to similar ones.

After the card is shaped with the designed sizes, we deliver them to engrave, which can be engraved in black or white. As we also design with a QR code, we choose black to assure the code can be scanned. As for the engraving is applied laser engraving, an AI image is required, so that the engraved content can be clear. Content of names, telephones, websites, emails are tested, and they are all available to be engrave on the card, surely if you have got an AI image of company logo, they can also be typed on the surface.
