Pure Tungsten Electrode Standard Diameters

Diameters of pure tungsten electrode can be tested by vernier caliper, which includes inner diameter and outer diameter. For solid tungsten electrode, the diameter is outer one. The key caliper is used mm as its unit with grids of 10, 20, and 50.

Besides the standard diameters, tungsten electrode diameter can be customized, so is the tolerance.

Tungsten Insert Gas Welding of Pure Tungsten Electrode

Tungsten Insert Gas Welding (TIG) or Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTA) is the arc welding process in which arc is generated between non consumable tungsten electrode and work pieces. The tungsten electrode and the weld pool are shielded by an inert gas normally argon and helium. This is also available in pure tungsten electrode.

Balled Tip Pure Tungsten Electrode

A balled tip is generally used for pure tungsten electrode and is suggested for use with the AC process on sine wave and conventional square wave TIG welders. To properly ball the end of the tungsten, simply apply the AC amperage recommended for a given electrode diameter and the ball on the end of the tungsten will form itself. The diameter of the balled end should not exceed 1.5 times the diameter of the electrode (for example, a 1/8-in. electrode should form a 3/16-in. diameter end), as having a larger sphere at the tip of the electrode can reduce arc stability and/or fall off and contaminate the welding.

Pure Tungsten Electrode-Chinatungsten

Pure tungsten electrode is the one without any addition of oxide. This allows the tip to form a clean, balled end which provides good arc stability on AC. The power of electronic transgression is as high as 4.5ev. Requiring a high voltage for arc derivation, it has a low current capacity and is easily burnt. It’s good for application under the condition of AC and in the situation of low welding requirements.



Pure tungsten electrodes can form a clean, balled tip when heated and provides great arc stability for AC welding with balanced wave. Pure tungsten also provides good arc stability for AC sine wave welding, especially on aluminum and magnesium, but is not typically used for DC welding (it does not provide as strong of arc starts as thoriated or ceriated tungsten electrodes).
