Tungsten Needles Are Applied in Microscopy

Tungsten needles are made from the material with high melting, high density, good corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity. They can be used for several applications in microscopy. Specifically, the following are common applications:

Atomic Force Microscope (AFM): An atomic force microscope is a high-resolution surface topography measurement instrument. In AFM, needles made of tungsten are used as probes or probes. They interact with the sample surface to acquire high-resolution topographical images and measure surface forces and properties.

Phonon Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM): STM is an instrument used to study the structure and properties of the surface of materials. In STM, a tungsten needle is used as a scanning probe. They sense and measure the electronic properties of sample surfaces through quantum tunneling and produce high-resolution atomic-scale images.

Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM): A TEM is an instrument used to observe and analyze the internal structure and properties of materials. In TEM, W needles are often used to prepare ultrathin sections of samples. They are used to cut materials, obtaining nanoscale flakes for high-resolution imaging and analysis under a transmission electron microscope.

Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM): A SEM is an instrument widely used in the observation and analysis of surface topography. In SEM, a tungsten needle is used as the cathode of the electron gun. They generate high-energy electron beams that are used to excite electrons on the sample surface and generate microscopic images.

The specific application of tungsten needles in microscopes will vary according to different microscope types and experimental needs. Therefore, in practical applications, it is very important to choose the proper shapes, sizes and characteristics to ensure the best microscope performance and results.

Why Tungsten Needles Are Suitable for Microscopy Applications

The reason why tungsten needles can be used in microscopes is that they have some special properties and characteristics that make them suitable for various applications in microscopes. Here are some reasons:

High melting point: Tungsten material has an extremely high melting point, about 3410 degrees Celsius. This allows this mental needle to withstand high-temperature environments in the applications of microscopy, such as electron microscopy, where they are used to generate beams of high-energy electrons. Its high melting point ensures that the needle can work stably for a long time without melting or losing its shape.

High hardness and wear resistance: Tungsten is a very hard material with excellent wear resistance. In the applications of microscopy, they are often required to contact and manipulate sample surfaces, and their high hardness and wear resistance allow them to withstand these stresses and maintain a long service life. In addition, its hardness can also provide high-resolution imaging and detection capabilities.

Sharpness and Small Size: W needles can be fabricated into very sharp and small shapes, enabling them to achieve extremely high spatial resolution in microscopy applications. This allows them to be used for atomic-scale imaging, surface topography measurements, and sample manipulation, as in atomic force microscopy and phonon scanning tunneling microscopy.

Excellent conductivity: Tungsten is an excellent conductive material with low resistivity and high conductivity. This enables them to provide stable electron flow and electrical signal transmission in electron microscopy and electrochemical applications.

Given that, tungsten needles are an ideal material for various microscopy applications. They can withstand high temperature, high stress environments, provide high-resolution imaging and detection capabilities, and have long life and stability, thus providing reliable tools and support for research and analysis of microscopy.

Tungsten Needles and Tungsten Rhenium Needles Used in the Construction of Probe Cards

Tungsten needle, also named tungsten pin, mainly refer to thin tungsten rod or thin tungsten rod with sharp tip. Their properties are basically the same, but uses are different. Mostly, their diameters are usually below 2mm and lengths range from 15mm to 100mm.

For thin tungsten rod, it is mainly used as an electrode for argon arc welding. During welding, an arc will be generated between the tungsten electrode and the workpiece, and under the action of the arc heat, the filler metal will melt with the workpiece to form a weld.

Tungsten rod with pointed tip can be simply understood as pure tungsten or tungsten alloys with pointed tips at one end or both ends, which are mainly used as instrument probes, such as digital four-probe testers. The distance between the four tungsten needles in the digital four-probe tester cannot be too long or too short, and each one has a different function.

The rods with pointed tip are usually called tungsten probes. Most integrated circuits are tested using cantilever blade and epoxy ring probe cards. Contact resistance, balanced contact force and card life are directly dependent on probe material and shape. Therefore, a critical design step for any card is the specification of the probes.

In blade cards, probes are soldered to metal or ceramic blades, which in turn are mounted to a printed wiring board (PWB) to match the contact land pattern of the device under test. For epoxy ring cards, the probes are arranged in a contact pad pattern, embedded in the epoxy ring, and the bake-hardened assembly is bonded and soldered to the PWB.

The use of tungsten rhenium (WRe) needles in probe card construction has grown considerably over the past two years. Traditionally, tungsten (W) probes have been used for many reasons - excellent stiffness, hardness and wear properties.

The growing acceptance of WRe as an alternative probe material seems to be mainly due to the good user experience. Chinatungsten/CTIA GROUP found both tungsten and WRe materials were effective in scrubbing the contact pads. But due to its higher hardness, the WRe probe exhibits excellent resistance to tip fouling and better overall lifetime characteristics.
